Home Remedies To Clean Dentures
Posted on: 21 January 2015
Dentures are basically false removable teeth made of metal or acrylic (plastic). They are designed to fit snugly over your gums to replace missing teeth or to cover gaps. Just like your natural teeth, dentures get stained with food particles and even plaque. If left unattended, they can easily discolour. There is a wide range of products available in stores for cleaning dentures. However, most of them are pricey and not affordable, especially because dentures need to be cleaned regularly. The good thing is that there are easy home recipes you can make to clean dentures. Most of the ingredients are things you use regularly in your home, and the rest can be obtained cheaply.
Bleach
Chlorine bleach is a common household cleaning agent and disinfectant. In the same way, it can be used to clean your dentures. You need to be careful when using bleach because too much may damage the dentures. If you dilute it correctly, your dentures will appear dazzling after a few soaks. To prepare the solution, mix half a cup of chlorine bleach with one cup water. Stir the liquids to mix them. The ratio should always be 2 to 1 (water to chlorine). You can soak the dentures for up to one hour. Bleach is a strong agent, and you need to rinse the dentures thoroughly. You can use lemon water in your second last rinse. Dentist warns against using chlorine bleach if your dentures have soft lining as the bleach will destroy the lining.
Vinegar
White vinegar is a natural disinfectant, and soaking your dentures in vinegar not only cleans them but impedes the growth of fungus. Mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a glass and immerse the dentures in the solution. You can let them soak overnight. In the morning, simply rinse the dentures and they are good to go.
Vodka
Vodka is useful in the house as a mould inhibitor; however, it can also be effective for your dentures. Vodka will act as a disinfectant for your dentures and will also brighten the teeth. It is advisable to use a wide jar that has a lid; this way you can soak the dentures in the jar several times. Simply place the teeth in the jar and pour enough vodka to cover them. You can allow them to soak for several hours or even overnight for best results.
Tip
Dentures are delicate and they can easily break when dropped. Always ensure that you clean them over a sink or bowl.
